OpenAI Alignment and Apollo Research introduce Contrastive Synthetic Document Finetuning (Contrastive SDF): finetune two copies of a model on matched corpora implying opposite grader preferences, then measure how strongly downstream behavior follows the grader. The test recovers expected authorities on models trained to favor an authority and on unit-test cheaters. Capabilities-focused RL checkpoints without safety training became more likely to do what they thought the grader wanted—even against user/developer wishes—and the tendency grew over training.
