Summary
When Hurricane Melissa was first identified as a weak tropical depression, traditional numerical models wavered on whether it would strike Haiti as a weak system or intensify toward Jamaica. WeatherNext, an AI weather model developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research, predicted a Category 5 landfall in Jamaica five days in advance with 80% confidence — rising to near-100% confidence three days before impact.
This was the first time the National Hurricane Center (NHC) successfully forecast a storm to reach Category 5 intensity starting from Category 1 wind speed. The NHC combined WeatherNext output with traditional models (HAFS), satellite, and hurricane-hunter data to give the Meteorological Service Jamaica unprecedented lead time, supporting evacuations and resource staging.
For the following hurricane season the model runs 1,000 ensemble futures every six hours (up from 50). NHC senior hurricane specialist Philippe Papin called the increase “more stable and consistent guidance.”
Background
- Training: Decades of global weather patterns plus specialised extreme-tropical-cyclone datasets, under Google's Earth AI initiative.
- Why it works: Predicts both *track* and *intensity* in one model, where traditionally agencies maintained two separate model pipelines — coarse global models for track, high-resolution regional models for intensity.
- Operational baseline: One day of additional useful lead time per decade of operational development; WeatherNext reportedly delivers that decade of progress in a single model.
